About the Author

Heather Darcy Bhandari is the Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon, a nonprofit exhibition and studio space program in Brooklyn, New York. Its mission is to nurture and support emerging, under-recognized mid-career, and women artists in the creation and exhibition of new work. She is also an independent curator, adjunct lecturer at Brown University, and a consultant to several for-profit and nonprofit arts institutions. Heather lectures and participates in portfolio reviews and panel discussions across the country. She is on the board of directors of visual arts at Art Omi (an artist residency in Ghent, New York) and the advisory boards of artfcity (an online, art-related publishing platform) and Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn. She was on the board of NURTUREart for nearly a decade. For the last fifteen years, she was a director of Mixed Greens gallery where she curated over one hundred exhibitions while managing a roster of nearly two-dozen emerging to mid-career artists. Heather received a BA from Brown University and an MFA from Pennsylvania State University. Her career began at contemporary galleries Sonnabend and Lehmann Maupin, both in New York City.Jonathan Melber began his career as an arts-and-entertainment lawyer in New York, representing artists, galleries, collectors and a host of creative individuals and companies. He eventually left his legal practice to join the art e-commerce startup 20x200 as head of business development, later moving to LA to run content acquisition business affairs at Hulu. Today, Jonathan handles monetization strategy and digital licensing for Turner’s entertainment networks. Having purchased the first edition of this book I was impressed by the no nonsense information presented in the book so I was eagerly anticipating the Revised and updated version...so much so that I preordered it. I was particularly interested in the updated sections dealing with social marketing and other online marketing as that was the main thing that would have changed and would have benefited from updating.I wish I had waited. The updates are minimal and as mentioned, the social media and online marketing aspects were hardly touched! This is a major omission in a book about selling art in 2017 and while there were some additions to the first version the skimpy changes do not warrant purchasing this revised edition if you have the first one. You will really not find that much added.If you are buying for the first time then this edition is a good as the original and the added updated material (however minimal it is) makes it a good purchase worth the money.

The focus of this book is not the doing of art but the business of art. If an artist considers his or her output as more than a hobby then the business of art becomes critical. For most artists this means getting work placed in a commercial gallery, something that is not always taught in school. The content of this book, written from the perspective of a gallery owner, is therefore advice worth taking. The tips are pragmatic and based on experience. My only complaint is the design and layout of the book. This is not an aesthetic issue but one of readability. The layout seems to be based on the notion that contemporary readers have a short attention span and are always ready to jump to something new. It also seems to assume that the reader is young with perfect eyesight. Page layout is of two types. Most pages have the narrative text in a column toward the binding with a more narrow outer column made up of quotes from those in the gallery business. This use of the sidebar is a good way to add specific bits of information related to the general narrative. However, for me, this results in a visually cramped page. In addition, the condensed sans serif font is 9 points in the narrative column while the sidebar text is in 7.5 points. This last is just too small for me to read. The information is of real interest so I guess I will get a new prescription for my glasses. The second page design, scattered throughout, places one quote on the page using a large 17 point font. These quotes are no more informative than those in the sidebars. They also have very narrow page margins so that text rolls into the binding gutter. Minor quibbles? Not if the page design makes it difficult to read the book. Plus, a book about the pragmatics of art should be both artful and functional in its own design.

I teach a professional practices course in a BFA program at a State University in Pennsylvania; for several years I've made this book required reading for my professional practices students. By far, it's the most informative, accurate, and well-written I've ever seen on the subject. The authors fully understand the art business, and they understand the problems and challenges of making meaningful art and interfacing with the higher-level business end of things. A former student sent a text to me yesterday as he attended his first MFA class in Professional Development at a well-respected university in New York. He was excited to see that they were using the same book in his grad level class. It didn't surprise me -- I've seen no better resource on the market. I've been involved in the art world for 40+ years as an artist, critic, curator, and professor and this book is without a doubt the current gold standard.

The authors did a great job in providing insights and guidelines for the visual artist who wants to approach the business side of things. After conferring with a handful of MFA friends, they've said that some of these things are not significantly covered in grad school.I fully agree with several other Amazon reviewers about the graphics / layout of the entire book. The design choice (unecessary bold type for the main text, huge margins with narrow sidebars and tiny font)... this all becomes a visual strain.Overall, this book is worthwhile. Hopefully, the authors will do an updated version at some point, and alter their design choices to make this a visually-smoother read.Beyond the usefulness of this book, part of what makes one successful in the art business world goes way beyond the practicalities --- part of it is your personality, your contacts, your willingness to jump through hoops (no matter how you feel), lucky timing, hard work, and your ability to schmooze. Most of the artists I know get their exhibits and from community endeavors, outreach, and just plain old hard work.

I was lucky to be a student of Heather's back in 2012, and we used this excellent book in her class. I went back to my parents' house during a work holiday earlier this year and randomly found it (I don't work in a field even remotely related to art). After skimming through it I was struck how its lessons are highly practical for many other fields, self-employed or not. However, if your interests lie in beginning a career in the visual arts, collecting, or sales, this book is an absolute must-have.

This is a book that I highly recommend if you are just starting out in the art world. I used this book along with "The Artist's Guide to Grant Writing..." which if you buy this book buy them both because they lend support to each other. Good luck.

I'm an emerging artist and this book proved to be really, really useful. Highly recommend. I also bought "The Artist's Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love" but hasn't finished reading it. They are very similar, but ART/WORK is better in my opinion. More interesting to read, more accessible and to the point.

I have read multitudes of books regarding the three divisions of the soul but they have always been written in language and terms difficult/impossible to comprehend-this books solves that problem. There are many, under different names, "Bible" stories except these "myths" were written long before the Bible was even thought of-certainly food for thought. The old stories were great-the Egyptian time line was so easy to understand-well written! One can draw their own conclusions as to the similarities of RA and the God of the New Testament; Set and the god of the Old Testament. There is much to review and ponder here-GREAT work. So easy to read and comprehend.

Tales of Ancient Egypt by Roger Lancelyn Green includes several stories from the beginning to the end of ancient Egypt, told in a way that is easy for children to understand. The book is split into three sections: Tales of the Gods, Tales of Magic, and Tales of Adventure. At the end there is a Time Chart with the stories listed in the time period they are from. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in or studying ancient Egypt.

While I personally found the book to be incredibly interesting, my 5th grade daughter did not. I am a history buff so it held my attention while we read it for a homeschool unit on Ancient Egypt. Her attention wandered though. The book is well written and filled with history but it may be too in depth of a topic for some kids. To break it up a bit, we combined it with other activities and books that she was more interested in.With that said, it did what I intended it to do. She learned and as a homeschool mom, I can't ask for much more than that.

This book is definitely aimed towards children in the way its written. But I got a ton of enjoyment out of it even as an adult. The stories are unique in the context of ancient civilizations, the Egyptians definitely viewed things a bit differently than just about anyone else. After reading this I grabbed a couple of the other Puffin compilation books, Norse myths and Greek myths, I'm looking forward to reading those as well :).

great little collection of tales. Beautifully done. I enjoyed them and my 9 year old granddaughter enjoyed them, too. Amazing how some are identical to Jewish tales of King Solomon! This book is my favorite so far in my collection of Egyptian myth books.

Curtis Sittenfeld's poignant and occassionally angst-ridden debut novel Prep is the story of Lee Fiora, a South Bend, Indiana, teenager who wins a scholarship to the prestigious Ault school, an East Coast institution where "money was everywhere on campus, but it was usually invisible." As we follow Lee through boarding school, we witness firsthand the triumphs and tragedies that shape our heroine's coming-of-age. Yet while Sittenfeld may be a skilled storyteller, her real gift lies in her ability to expertly give voice to what is often descibed as the most alienating period in a young person's life: high school.

True to its genre, Prep is filled with boarding school stereotypes--from the alienated gay student to the picture perfect blond girl; the achingly earnest first-year English teacher and the dreamy star basketball player who never mentions the fact that he's Jewish. Lee's status as an outsider is further affirmed after her parents drive 18 hours in their beat-up Datsun to attend Parent's Weekend, where most of the kids "got trashed and ended up skinny-dipping in the indoor pool" at their parents' fancy hotel. Yet even as the weekend deteriorates into disaster and ends with a heartbreaking slap across the face, Sittenfeld never blames or excuses anyone; rather, she simply incorporates the experience into Lee's sense of self. ("How was I supposed to understand, when I applied at the age of thirteen, that you have your whole life to leave your family?")

By the time Lee graduates from Ault, some readers may tire of her constant worrying and self-doubting obsessions. However, every time we feel close to giving up on her, Sittenfeld reels us back in and makes us root for Lee. The strong narrative voice belongs to Lee Fiora, who leaves South Bend, Ind., for Boston's prestigious Ault School and finds her sense of identity supremely challenged. Now, at 24, she recounts her years learning "everything I needed to know about attracting and alienating people." Sittenfeld neither indulges nor mocks teen angst, but hits it spot on: "I was terrified of unwittingly leaving behind a piece of scrap paper on which were written all my private desires and humiliations. The fact that no such scrap of paper existed... never decreased my fear." Lee sees herself as "one of the mild, boring, peripheral girls" among her privileged classmates, especially the über-popular Aspeth Montgomery, "the kind of girl about whom rock songs were written," and Cross Sugarman, the boy who can devastate with one look ("my life since then has been spent in pursuit of that look"). Her reminiscences, still youthful but more wise, allow her to validate her feelings of loneliness and misery while forgiving herself for her lack of experience and knowledge. The book meanders on its way, light on plot but saturated with heartbreaking humor and written in clean prose. Sittenfeld, who won Seventeen's fiction contest at 16, proves herself a natural in this poignant, truthful book.
